Volcanic Rocks, Award-Winning Pies and Must-See Art: Evi O’s Guide to a Hanging Rock Road Trip
Volcanic Rocks, Award-Winning Pies and Must-See Art: Evi O’s Guide to a Hanging Rock Road Trip
The Sydney-based artist and Day Trip co-author shares her go-to bushwalking spots and other stops – all just a quick drive from Melbourne.
The Sydney-based artist and Day Trip co-author shares her go-to bushwalking spots and other stops – all just a quick drive from Melbourne.
“Believe it or not, I climbed my first tree when I was 29 … I was born a city girl and had always glorified urbanity, although a part of me was always curious about the other side,” Evi O says.
Over the past six years, the Sydney-based painter, sculpture and book designer has discovered a love for bushwalking, and has completed just under 250 walks across Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania.
When she visits Victoria, Evi has three favourite places to daytrip, bushwalk and refuel, and often starts at Melbourne airport with an Avis car hire to make it easier to do it all. The multidisciplinary artist is also an Avis Preferred member, so she can skip the queue at the car hire desk and instead has a direct-to-car experience – that is, she can head straight to the car after arrival and drive off without signing paperwork or picking up the keys (they’re waiting for her in the car). All she needs to do is load her stuff in the back, start the car and she’s off on her road trip while other passengers on her flight are likely still waiting to leave the airport. Plus, Avis has electric options that help her better support the environment, or, if she’s travelling with a lot of luggage, she can rent an SUV for extra space.
Originally from Indonesia, Evi moved to Sydney for university and, in her mid-twenties, she felt called to nature. Cut to 2020 and she and her now-partner Andrew Grune had only just started dating. It was the pandemic, so they started going on bushwalks to get to know each other. “Honestly, we were both too scared to admit we liked each other and just kept going out on road trips,” she says.
The couple eventually turned their joint love of bushwalking into a successful book series, Day Trip, featuring state-based guides to nature walks that Evi designs, Grune takes the photos for, and they co-write together. The books were so successful that the duo even started a spin-off called Dog Trip, filled with dog-friendly bushwalks.
“I bushwalk when I need to steam off in a major way – it’s like an instant holiday,” she says. It also stops life from feeling overwhelming and helps her keep her priorities in check. “Spending time in nature helps me zoom out from modern humans’ everyday problems … It will give you the feeling that life can be done in many ways, and that has positively made me more intentional with things I choose to do in life.”
Here are her top Melbourne daytrip stops – starting just 45 minutes from Melbourne Airport, and all conveniently close together, so you can get a rental car and tackle them on separate trips or all on the same day. Plus, if you’re not heading back to the airport right away, Avis’s one-way car rental option means you can day trip and then return the car in the city – whatever’s easiest for you.
Hanging Rock
Peter Weir’s 1975 film Picnic at Hanging Rock has inspired many, including Evi, to visit the location, which is a culturally significant place for three Aboriginal Traditional Owner groups – the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung, the Djaara and the Taungurung.
Only a 45-minute drive from Melbourne Airport, it’s a “must-go for rock-lovers”, who will be “wowed by the array of volcanic formations there” – the result of an eruption thought to have occurred six million years ago.
Spending a whole day at the site, where you can get lost wandering through and admiring the rocks is ideal, but Evi says you can cut a visit down to two or three hours if you need. She recommends visiting at sunrise or sunset with a picnic, of course, and a cushion or two to sit on.
Kyneton
Kyneton is a cultural hub in the countryside. Just 17 minutes’ drive from Hanging Rock, this arty town is great to explore from the comfort of a luxury car. Evi says a visit to Stockroom Art Gallery – regional Victoria’s largest privately owned contemporary art space, housed in an 1850s butter factory – is a must. As is a leisurely stroll around the Kyneton Botanic Gardens, where Evi loves to traverse the dog-friendly Campaspe River Walk with her grey whippet, Henri.
After the walk, Evi recommends a visit to Country Cob Bakery, where the fish amok pie – a pastry-encased version of the Cambodian fish curry thought to date back to the Khmer empire – was named Australia’s best pie of 2023. (Evi’s favourite, though, is still the classic beef.) You can return the car at Avis Kyneton and stay in town for a few days. But if you’re driving on, Evi suggests stopping by the servo to pick up her favourite road trip snacks: a Boss Coffee iced latte, Sour Squirms and a Twirl Breakaway.
Organ Pipes National Park
There are three volcanic rock formations to observe during this short walk, including the Tessellated Pavement, which Evi describes as “volcanic tetris”, and Rosette Rock, which “looks like a rock that failed to enter a time travel trip – it looks like the rock has been sucked into this vortex and stopped halfway”.
“I like that it’s not that hard, but you get heaps to see – I feel like you get a lot of rewards by not doing much,” Evi says of Organ Pipes, a national park that’s just a 37-minute drive from Kyneton. Conveniently, it’s also on the way to Melbourne, where Evi can drop off her rental car in the CBD thanks to Avis’s one-way car rental offer. Or she can go further into Victoria, where there’s a range of Avis locations to return the car, and spend a few days on a longer walk.
